Total Hip Replacement Implants
Total Hip Replacement Systems, Images 1A, B, C, D:
- (A) Conventional titanium cementless femoral stem and modular (removable) ceramic head, which articulates with a titanium acetabular shell and polyethylene liner. (This is currently the bearing combination of choice for most patients. The other designs shown below have had documented problems with the bearing surface.)
- (B) Large metal head articulating with a cobalt-chrome acetabular shell with no intervening polyethylene. This is termed a metal-on-metal (MoM) total hip replacement (THR).
- (C) Modular neck femoral stem design.
- (D) Large diameter metal head on a trunnion.
